Alpaca: connect your US securities account

Quick start: Create the platform API with the CoinRobot IP addresses; create the Connector; start a Plan.

Alpaca is not a cryptocurrency exchange; it is a US brokerage service. The CoinRobot Alpaca Connector trades stocks and ETFs listed on US markets—including NASDAQ- and NYSE-listed securities—using the USD balance in your Alpaca account. Your cash and securities remain in the Alpaca account.

Important: for non-leveraged use only

This setup is comparable to crypto “Spot” trading, but it submits ordinary stock market orders. The robot's free-cash accounting, position sizing, and risk checks were designed and tested for cash-funded, non-leveraged trading. It was not designed or tested for margin or other leveraged account use, so do not use it that way even if individual orders might technically fill. The Connector does not submit short or options orders, but it does not enforce a cash-only restriction at Alpaca: if margin buying power is enabled, an order can use it—for example because its fill price rises after the balance check. Before starting a Plan, use an Alpaca cash account or disable margin where available, keep sufficient settled USD, and verify that no leveraged buying power is being used.

Open an account and understand Alpaca’s role

For live trading, create an account on the Alpaca signup page, then complete the identity and account checks requested by Alpaca. Alpaca decides which countries it supports, which securities are available, and which market, settlement, tax, or trading restrictions apply.

The Connector configuration includes US stocks and ETFs listed on NASDAQ and NYSE, as well as securities traded on other supported US venues. Alpaca is therefore not simply “the NASDAQ exchange”: it is a broker providing access to multiple US trading venues. The currently selectable symbols are shown in Connectors.

Fund the account with USD

  1. Open the funding/transfers area in Alpaca and use only the instructions displayed for your own Alpaca account.
  2. Fund the account in USD. Depending on your location and eligibility, Alpaca may offer a linked-bank (ACH) deposit or a bank/wire transfer.
  3. When using Wise, its USD account details may be linked as a bank account or Wise may send USD to Alpaca’s displayed transfer instructions, if both services support that route in your region. A linked/ACH transfer can usually be free; Wise’s current transfer and currency-conversion terms determine any fee for a regular transfer.
  4. The sender account name must match the Alpaca account holder. Send a small test amount first and start the Plan only after the deposit has been credited.

Always follow Alpaca’s current funding instructions

Supported methods, fees, bank details, and processing times can vary by country and over time. Never copy account details from this or another general guide; verify the Funding/Transfers instructions in Alpaca and the fee shown by Wise before sending.

Create live API credentials

  1. In Alpaca, select the Live account and create or reveal the Trading API Key ID and Secret Key. A Paper key is for simulated trading and does not work with the Alpaca (Live) Connector.
  2. Store the secret securely as soon as it is shown; Alpaca may not display it again later.
  3. Never send credentials by email or chat. CoinRobot does not need your Alpaca password or two-factor code.
  4. If the credentials may have been exposed, revoke/regenerate them in Alpaca and then update the Connector.

Add the Connector and start a Plan

  1. In Connectors, create an Alpaca (Live) Connector.
  2. Select the tradeable stocks and ETFs, then enter the Alpaca API Key ID and Secret Key.
  3. Save the Connector. If its API test fails, check that you used Live rather than Paper credentials, the key is active, both values are exact, and the Alpaca account is approved for trading.
  4. Create or open a Plan, select this Connector, review the strategy and USD amount, then start it. The robot sends market orders through Alpaca’s API.

Market hours, balance, and restrictions

The default market session is 09:30–16:00 New York time on weekdays; Alpaca’s calendar controls holidays and exceptional schedules. A market order can fill only when its applicable market session is open, and its execution price can differ from the last observed price.

Check the live balance in the Dashboard: open Dashboard and use Open position balances by connector. The Connector can handle USD, whole or fractional share quantities, and orders with at least USD 1 notional, subject to Alpaca support for the security.

Settlement, buying power, fractional-share availability, day-trading rules, and other account restrictions are enforced under Alpaca’s rules. A Plan order can therefore be rejected even when a balance is visible.

Security checklist

  • Use Live credentials for a live Connector and separate Paper credentials for practice.
  • Fund with USD from an account in your own name, and begin with a small test amount.
  • Do not use the Connector for margin or other leveraged trading: this operation is unsupported and untested. Use a cash account or disable margin where available and monitor settled cash and Alpaca buying power; the Connector itself does not prevent the use of margin.
  • Never disclose your Alpaca password, two-factor code, or API Secret Key.
  • To stop automation, stop the Plan. Revoking or regenerating the API key prevents new requests using the old credentials.

Trading involves market and execution risk. This is operational documentation, not investment, tax, or legal advice.
